{"id":56,"date":"2014-06-17T14:36:18","date_gmt":"2014-06-17T14:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=56"},"modified":"2024-04-28T12:23:24","modified_gmt":"2024-04-28T16:23:24","slug":"review-the-great-beauty-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=56","title":{"rendered":"The Great Beauty-2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Great Beauty-2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Director Paolo Sorrentino<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Starring Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scott&#8217;s Review #16<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275597.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1385\" src=\"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275597-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"70275597\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275597-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275597.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reviewed June 17, 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grade: A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Great Beauty is an Italian film and winner of the 2013 Best Foreign Language Oscar and, in my opinion, well deserved.<\/p>\n<p>The film is hardly conventional- it is thoughtful, character-driven, and quite Fellini-influenced.<\/p>\n<p>It takes some time to get into- the first thirty minutes are mostly people dancing and partying wildly.<\/p>\n<p>Set in present-day Rome, it tells the story of a successful sixty-five-year-old journalist who reflects on his life, past and present.<\/p>\n<p>The themes of loss and loneliness are explored, and while cynical, are not a downer.<\/p>\n<p>Quite the contrary, as one party after another, is thrown and the nightlife and excesses of Rome are the centerpieces.<\/p>\n<p>A main aspect of The Great Beauty is that all the money and success in the world do not measure happiness something that many people forget.<\/p>\n<p>The main character loses people close to him and many of his wealthy friends are bored and alone. This film is about life and its complexities.<\/p>\n<p>It left me thinking long after the credits rolled and is a huge testament to its power.
