{"id":488,"date":"2014-07-20T17:54:29","date_gmt":"2014-07-20T17:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=488"},"modified":"2024-03-03T16:52:20","modified_gmt":"2024-03-03T21:52:20","slug":"quartet-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=488","title":{"rendered":"Quartet- 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Quartet-2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Director Dustin Hoffman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scott&#8217;s Review #122<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/70243583.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1190\" src=\"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/70243583-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"70243583\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/70243583-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/70243583.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reviewed July 20, 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grade: B+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quartet (2012) is a fantastic little British film, directed by Dustin Hoffman, and starring the always wonderful Maggie Smith, whom one might argue could be watched in anything.<\/p>\n<p>I certainly could.<\/p>\n<p>Smith stars as a stubborn retired opera singer who begrudgingly settles in at Beecham House, a luxurious senior retirement home for former musicians in their final years.<\/p>\n<p>There she reunites with colleagues from years past who attempt to reunite for a concert for the public to save the home from foreclosure.<\/p>\n<p>The cast of senior citizens in Quartet is quite likable in one of the few smart films handling aging gracefully.<\/p>\n<p>There is comedy and drama mixed in as the intelligent characters are treated as such in their final years with a hint of soap opera to the film as some of them were intimate with others in years past and the current hijinks are hysterical.<\/p>\n<p>The subject of aging is treated with respect and dignity and not played for laughs, which is one aspect of the film that I adore.<\/p>\n<p>A talent-filled cast of British theater actors, along with some real-life musicians make this film a treat.<\/p>\n<p>It is terrific to see Pauline Collins (Upstairs\/Downstairs) in a large role.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quartet-2012 Director Dustin Hoffman Starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay Scott&#8217;s Review #122 Reviewed July 20, 2014 Grade: B+ Quartet (2012) is a fantastic little British film, directed by Dustin Hoffman, and starring the always wonderful Maggie Smith, whom one might argue could be watched in anything.
