{"id":235,"date":"2014-06-22T19:24:57","date_gmt":"2014-06-22T19:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=235"},"modified":"2026-10-07T10:08:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T14:08:44","slug":"dallas-buyers-club-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=235","title":{"rendered":"Dallas Buyers Club-2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dallas Buyers Club-2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Director Jean-Marc Vallee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Starring Matthew McConaughey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scott&#8217;s Review #54<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275751.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1327\" src=\"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275751-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"70275751\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275751-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70275751.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reviewed June 24, 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grade: A-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Dallas Buyers Club (2013) is a well-written screenplay based on the true story of a straight Texas man who contracted AIDS circa 1985.<\/p>\n<p>The film&#8217;s main appeal is the brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.<\/p>\n<p>1985 was a different period as far as the deadly virus goes- people did not know then what they do now.<\/p>\n<p>The fear and judgment featured in the film must be kept in mind for the time and location (Bible Belt Texas).<\/p>\n<p>McConaughey&#8217;s physical transformation is an amazing feat, to begin with, a normally handsome, well-built actor, turned gaunt and hollow-eyed, but he completely encompasses this role with an intense, character, rich and flawed.<\/p>\n<p>His body language and mannerisms are mesmerizing.<\/p>\n<p>Leto&#8217;s performance as a transsexual, also stricken with the disease, is equally amazing.<\/p>\n<p>The character is immediately sympathetic and vulnerable- a wounded bird you would like to take under your wing and save.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the subject, the film itself is not a downer, nor does it attempt to be preachy.
