{"id":232,"date":"2014-06-21T15:07:27","date_gmt":"2014-06-21T15:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=232"},"modified":"2026-03-24T14:03:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T18:03:27","slug":"mandingo-1975","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/?p=232","title":{"rendered":"Mandingo-1975"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mandingo-1975<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Director Richard Fleischer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Starring James Mason, Susan George<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scott&#8217;s Review #53<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70094784.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1028\" src=\"http:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70094784-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"70094784\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70094784-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/scottsfilmreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/70094784.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reviewed June 21, 2014<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grade: B+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mandingo is quite a controversial 1975 film and is inspirational to Quentin Tarantino&#8217;s Django Unchained (2012) and to 12 Years a Slave (2013), as it is very similar to the latter.<\/p>\n<p>It centers on a family of southern slave owners who eventually have physical relations and even romantic, loving relationships with their slaves.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a sub-plot involving bare-knuckle fights to the death among the enslaved men that is disturbing to witness.<\/p>\n<p>The entire film is extreme and difficult at times, but also has a mystical, dreamlike element to it and is in no way an exploitation film.<\/p>\n<p>The sticky, hot, deep southern setting adds a wonderful atmosphere.
